Examples

Scenario 1:

You have a package measuring 12cm x 6cm x 5cm and weighing 199g.

...

To calculate the volume, the formula is L x W x H. So using that formula, we substitute our values:

12cm x 6cm x 5cm = 360cm³ < 3220cm³

The total volume is 360cm³, which is under the limit of 3220cm³, so the total volume of the package is valid for the Expedited Lite service.

Next we check for any one dimension larger than 41cm. To do this, we order our dimensions from largest to smallest:

12cm > 6cm > 5cm

Since 12cm is our largest dimension, we compare that to 41cm.

12cm < 41cm

Doing so, we find that 12cm is less than 41cm, meaning none of the dimensions of the box are larger than the maximum allowable dimension of 41cm. This means the dimensions are valid for the Expedited Lite service.

Finally, we compare the weight to the maximum weight of 250 grams.

199g < 250g

Since the weight of 199g is less than 250g, the weight of the package is valid for the Expedited Lite service.

...

With all three criteria met (volume under 3220cm³, largest dimension below 41cm and weight under 250g), we can be sure that our package is valid and eligible for the Expedited Lite shipping service from Canada Post.

Scenario 2:

You have a package measuring 45cm x 8cm x 8cm and weighing 235g.

...

To calculate the volume, the formula is L x W x H. So using that formula, we substitute our values:

45cm x 8cm x 8cm = 2880cm³ < 3220cm³

The total volume is 2880cm³, which is under the limit of 3220cm³, so the total volume of the package is valid for the Expedited Lite service.

Next we check for any one dimension larger than 41cm. To do this, we order our dimensions from largest to smallest:

45cm > 8cm > 8cm

Since 45cm is our largest dimension, we compare that to 41cm.

45cm > 41cm

Doing so, we find that 45cm is greater than 41cm, meaning at least one of the dimensions of the box are larger than the maximum allowable dimension of 41cm. This means the dimensions are not valid for the Expedited Lite service. The weight is irrelevant at this point, as our dimensions are invalid.

...

With the largest dimension criteria not met (largest dimension above 41cm), our package is not valid or eligible for the Expedited Lite shipping service from Canada Post, and we will not be able to purchase the label on eBay.

Scenario 3:

You have a package measuring 20cm x 15cm x 12cm and weighing 92g.

...

To calculate the volume, the formula is L x W x H. So using that formula, we substitute our values:

20cm x 15cm x 12cm = 3600cm³ > 3220cm³

The total volume is 3600cm³, which is above the limit of 3220cm³, so the total volume of the package is not valid for the Expedited Lite service. The dimensions and weight are irrelevant at this point, as our volume is invalid.

...

With the volume criteria not met (volume is above 3220cm³), our package is not valid or eligible for the Expedited Lite shipping service from Canada Post, and we will not be able to purchase the label on eBay.

Scenario 4:

You have a package measuring 14cm x 12cm x 10cm and weighing 265g.

...

To calculate the volume, the formula is L x W x H. So using that formula, we substitute our values:

14cm x 12cm x 10cm = 1680cm³ < 3220cm³

The total volume is 1680cm³, which is under the limit of 3220cm³, so the total volume of the package is valid for the Expedited Lite service.

Next we check for any one dimension larger than 41cm. To do this, we order our dimensions from largest to smallest:

14cm > 12cm > 10cm

Since 14cm is our largest dimension, we compare that to 41cm.

14cm < 41cm

Doing so, we find that 14cm is less than 41cm, meaning none of the dimensions of the box are larger than the maximum allowable dimension of 41cm. This means the dimensions are valid for the Expedited Lite service.

Finally, we compare the weight to the maximum weight of 250 grams.

265g > 250g

Since the weight of 265g is greater than 250g, the weight of the package is not valid for the Expedited Lite service.

...

With the weight criteria not met (weight is above 250g), our package is not valid or eligible for the Expedited Lite shipping service from Canada Post, and we will not be able to purchase the label on eBay.

FAQs

Can an Expedited Lite label be purchased directly from Canada Post?

Unfortunately not. The Expedited Lite service is available through an exclusive partnership between Canada Post and eBay, so the only way to purchase it is by being logged in to eBay and clicking "Get shipping label" next to an order awaiting shipment. This takes you to the eBay Labels interface where the option to purchase the Expedited Lite label will be made available to you if your package dimensions and weight qualify.

What is the difference between Expedited and Expedited Lite?

Expedited is a service available to all Canada Post customers, whereas Expedited Lite is only available to shippers purchasing through eBay using their eBay seller account. Expedited Lite also has size and weight restrictions (no dimension above 41cm, weight not above 250g, volume not above 3220cm³). With these restrictions, however, shipping prices can be as low as $6 with tracking depending on destination, which is much cheaper than the regular Expedited rates advertised by Canada Post.

Does Expedited Lite come with insurance just like the standard Expedited does?

Yes, both Expedited and Expedited Lite come with up to $100 of package insurance coverage. If your item value exceeds $100, both services allow you to purchase extra insurance for an added fee.

Why does my label say the dimensions are 5x5x5 even though I inputted different dimensions?

All Expedited Lite labels will state dimensions of 5x5x5 in the bottom right corner of the label, even if the dimensions you inputted when you purchased the label on eBay were different. This is just a quirk of the service, and while it is unclear whether it is eBay or Canada Post that rewrites the dimensions to 5x5x5, what is clear is that it does not affect your shipment in any way - you will still be billed correctly by eBay for the Expedited Lite label. If you are interested, we suspect the reason for the 5x5x5 is to keep the volumetric weight below 250g and avoid any erroneous upcharges for the service, since it is only offered to eBay and not publicly to all Canada Post customers. Common pitfalls to avoid

Avoid...

Misrepresenting dimensions

Because...

You will get a rate adjustment long afterwards.

Further explained...

Canada Post has automated cameras that validate dimensions during the shipping process. You can lie about dimensions when you buy the label, but you can't escape their cameras, and a rate adjustment will be charged to your eBay seller account long after the item has been shipped. If your package dimensions aren't within the Expedited Lite limits, it is best to just choose a different shipping method.

When this validator can't help you...

Expedited Lite is strictly a domestic service, so if you need to ship internationally you will need to use a different shipping service and as such, this validator will not be very helpful to you.
